The Science
Understanding Light Therapy and Infrared Heat
Every product we carry is built around two well-studied technologies: photobiomodulation (red and near-infrared light) and infrared heat. Here is a plain-English overview of how they work and what the research actually examines.
Red light (620–700 nm)
Visible red light, typically delivered around 630–660 nm, is absorbed close to the surface of the skin. Research on these wavelengths focuses on how light interacts with mitochondria — the energy-producing structures inside cells — and how that interaction may support the skin's natural renewal processes and general appearance over time.
Near-infrared light (800–900 nm)
Near-infrared light, commonly delivered around 850 nm, is invisible to the eye and penetrates deeper than visible red light. Studies of these wavelengths explore their role in supporting muscle recovery after exercise and overall physical comfort as part of a consistent wellness routine.
Why irradiance matters
Irradiance — measured in mW/cm² — describes how much light energy reaches your body at a given distance. It is one of the most important specifications when comparing devices, because it determines session efficiency. We publish independent, manufacturer-tested irradiance figures on our panel listings (for example, 172 mW/cm² at 6 inches for the SunGlow EW500) so you can compare on real numbers rather than marketing language.
Infrared sauna heat
Full-spectrum infrared saunas warm the body directly rather than heating the air to extreme temperatures the way traditional saunas do. Sessions are typically experienced at lower ambient temperatures, which many people find more comfortable for regular use. Infrared sauna use is studied in the context of relaxation, post-exercise routines, and overall wellbeing.
Building a routine
Consistency matters more than intensity. Most manufacturers recommend short, regular sessions — typically 10–20 minutes for light therapy panels — rather than occasional long ones. Every product page includes the manufacturer's recommended session guidance.
